Professor Emeritus (PhD) Bryan Harvey held many positions at the U of S, including two departmental headships and Vice-President Research (2002-03). He demonstrated his administrative skills in managing departmental mergers and the development of interdisciplinary programs. His early research helped to develop canola. His most significant research was the breeding of malting barley varieties which have brought hundreds of millions of dollars to Canada.
A trusted advisor to the seed sector he has participated in the negotiation of international treaties relating to plant genetic resources. His work in international agricultural research has intensified and in recent years has focused on the world’s poor. He has been recognized by some two dozen awards and honorary memberships, half of them since his retirement. He is a member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (2005) and an officer of the Order of Canada (2006).
