2018 Honorary Life Award

Professor Emeritus Michael Hayden received his B.A. and M.A. from John Carroll University. After study at Loyola University and the Sorbonne he received his Ph.D. in 1963. He taught at the University of Detroit (1961-1966) and the U of S (1966-2001), specializing in early modern French, social and religious history. From 1988 to 1992 he and Ron Marken pioneered the teaching of live interactive university courses via television throughout Saskatchewan.

At various times he was chair of the History Department, the Arts and Science and Council Budget Committees and Treasurer of the Faculty Association. He received the Master Teacher Award in 2000 and the Faculty Association Academic Freedom Award in 2005. Hayden held Canada Council and SSHRC grants throughout his career. He published many articles and nine books, three of which appeared after his retirement. Two of these three were nominated for Saskatchewan Book Awards and one received the Shea Prize from the American Catholic Historical Association. He served on the boards of Friendship Inn and Interval House and was a founding member of the Saskatoon Food Bank. He was a member of the Executive of the USRA for nine years, working to increase membership and develop better relations with university administrators.
