Dr. Barry Brown is Professor Emeritus of Curriculum Studies, and former Head of the Departments of Curriculum Studies and Educational Communications and Technology in the College of Education, USask. While Barry’s academic preparation, a Bachelor’s degree from USask and PhD from Indiana University, and his scholarly and administrative contributions at our university are great and extensive, his passion is Beekeeping! Apiculture is a multi-million-dollar industry in Saskatchewan, and we are a major supplier of honey in Canada. In addition to the direct benefits of the production of honey, bees as pollinators have an essential impact on the yields of crops, the production of seed for crops, the yields of vegetable crops such and the setting of fruit in Saskatoons, apples, cherries and haskaps. Barry began beekeeping as a hobby in 1973 with two hives in the back yard of the home of he and his late partner, Professor Emerita Yvonne (former Dean of Nursing). After retirement, Barry scaled up to a commercial level operation near Langham and is currently operating about 1000 beehives producing 10-20 trailer loads of honey per year. From the get-go Barry has been an advocate for the industry and a mentor for hobbyists and novices in the commercial side of the business, sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge with those who are passionate about beekeeping. Check out stories about the Bar2Bee Honey Ranch. Barry has recently announced his intention to retire a second time. His wonderful legacy to both education and beekeeping is leaving a lasting impact. Congratulations, Barry!
