Professor Emeritus Bryan Harvey has contributed extensively to plant sciences and the Canadian agriculture economy, notably the development of more than 60 varieties of barley throughout his prolific 50-year research career. His ground-breaking research developed varieties that have delivered tremendous returns to Canadian agriculture and the malting industry. His most notable variety, Harrington, is the gold standard for two-row malting barley. In retirement, Bryan has continued to impart his academic expertise and leadership on the boards of provincial, national and international organizations.

His accomplishments continue to be applauded, through appointment of Officer of the Order of Canada, Honorary Doctor of Science, Silver and Platinum Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medals, many Honorary Life Memberships and induction into both the Saskatchewan and Canadian Agricultural Halls of Fame.

Bryan’s contributions to the University of Saskatchewan Retirees Association and our retiree community have also been exceptional. He has held positions of USRA President, Vice-President, Chair and member of Nominations, Engagement, Education, Recreation and Social, and Awards committees. He has been our representative on the College and University Retirees Association of Canada (CURAC/ARUCC) for years, and most ably chaired two national conferences at USask, in 2016 and 2023. Bryan has also served as CURAC President, Vice-President, Nominations and Awards, and Conference Committees and was ex officio on others. Éminence grise is the phrase that Tom Wilson, USRA Past-President and current Treasurer, uses to describe Bryan. This translates to ‘loyal confidant and respected authority – an Elder Stateman,’ which Bryan certainly is. Highly dedicated and diligent, he serves as USRA’s corporate memory, parliamentarian and all-round go-to person when our members need counsel and wise advice. Bryan and his partner Eileen Harvey were celebrated at a special event this February, at which time President Peter Stoicheff remarked that in his travels, what his hosts know most about USask is Dr. Harvey’s breeding of the most excellent malting barley for beer!

Congratulations and thank you Bryan!
