Dr. Bruce Coulman is Professor Emeritus of Agriculture and Bioresources. His prestigious academic career and his remarkable contributions to the “sustainability and growth of Saskatchewan and Canadian agriculture” (Dr. Angela Bedard-Haughn, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Bioresources) have been celebrated. Dean Bedard-Haughn noted that “his forage varieties will continue to benefit livestock and forage producers, the agriculture sector and the environment for many decades to come.”

Bruce graduated from USask and U of Manitoba and joined McGill University in 1976 before moving back to USask’s Agriculture and Agri-Food Research Center in 1993. He later served as Head of the Department of Plant Sciences before retiring in 2019. We are told it takes years of dedication and whole lot of patience to develop a strong forage variety. For Bruce, his journey into plant breeding started when he was working in the Crop Science Department in high school. His enjoyment in working the plots led a long career. Some of the things he has found most satisfying have been developing varieties that are widely used by farmers, mentoring graduate students from all over the world and watching these mentees go on to their own distinguished careers. When asked about some of the big changes he has seen over the course of his career, he reiterates, “There have been [a lot of] changes and the one thing that hasn’t changed is it takes quite a bit of time to develop varieties, and so you have to have a lot of patience in this business.”

Bruce was recently inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame, whose mission is ‘to salute the agricultural leaders in Saskatchewan.’ Last November, he was formally inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in honor and celebration of his outstanding contributions to the agriculture and food industry.

Bruce, your patience has been highly productive! Congratulations and best wishes from the USRA!
