Dr. Peter Butt, a retired clinical associate professor of family medicine, has significantly shaped medical education, policy, and practice in Saskatchewan, expanding physician services across northern Saskatchewan and playing a leading role provincially and nationally as an addiction medicine expert.  Over his career spanning more than three decades, his work at the University of Saskatchewan and within the provincial health system has been instrumental in advancing compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals and communities affected by substance use disorders. Dr. Butt is a strong advocate for Indigenous health and has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to patient-centered care, public health, and medical education.

Early in his career, Dr. Butt practiced comprehensive rural family medicine, developing broad clinical expertise in emergency medicine, anesthesiology, and palliative care. As a past Director of Northern Medical Services, he played a key role in expanding physician services across northern Saskatchewan, improving access to care in Indigenous and remote communities. His work emphasized the importance of cultural awareness, continuity of care, and meaningful relationships between providers and the communities they serve.

For over 20 years, Dr. Butt served as a consultant in addiction medicine with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, caring for individuals with complex mental health and substance use challenges. He has guided generations of medical students, residents, and early-career physicians and retired from the University of Saskatchewan in 2024.

Nationally, Dr. Butt has shaped public health policy through his leadership in developing Canada’s Low Risk Drinking Guidelines and co-chairing subsequent national guidance on alcohol use and health. As a Clinical Associate Professor, he contributed extensively to teaching, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, including work on Indigenous wellness and culturally informed approaches to care.

In recognition of his outstanding service and leadership, Dr. Butt has been honoured by the Saskatchewan Medical Association for his lasting contributions to medical education, health policy, and patient treatment. Dr. Butt has helped strengthen pathways toward health, understanding, and reconciliation, making a meaningful and lasting contribution to Indigenous peoples and communities. Thank you and congratulations Peter!
